Smart Water Meters in Kashmir: Installation only after public consultation

Srinagar: The government is considering the installation of smart water meters in Kashmir to ensure efficient water usage. However, any implementation will be preceded by thorough public consultation and expert advice to avoid any perception of forced imposition.

Chief Engineer of the Jal Shakti (PHE) Department Kashmir, Bram Jyoti Sharma, stated that no immediate steps are being taken.

Speaking on the matter, he said, “Initially, we will focus on metering commercial water connections. This will allow us to study the pros and cons of the system. Based on detailed analysis and feedback from various organizations, we will move forward in a calculated manner.”

Sharma emphasized the importance of public opinion, adding, “The government wants to ensure that people do not feel this is being imposed on them. We will take measured steps and implement the plan only after proper deliberation and consensus.”

For now, the government has ruled out any rushed decisions regarding the project.

Pertinently, before forming the government, the National Conference (NC) had strongly opposed the proposal, terming it as “unjust” and “cruel.”

Last year, the party had denounced the idea, stating that imposing such a burden on the people of Srinagar was unacceptable. However, with NC now in power, the proposal is being actively considered, sparking criticism from various quarters.

The Kashmir Trade Alliance (KTA) has strongly opposed the government’s decision to install smart water meters in commercial establishments starting this year, calling for immediate intervention from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to halt this initiative.
